The Normandy coast
Open the map in 1938 and zoom in on the coast of Normandy, where the Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches lay. Why not land at Calais, the shortest crossing?

On 6 June 1944 Allied armies landed on five beaches in Normandy. Within three months Paris and Brussels were free; by spring 1945 the Allies crossed the Rhine. Students locate the beaches, follow the liberation on the map and weigh its cost.
Un appel de l’histoire · nouveau
The early hours of 5 June 1944
Southwick House, near Portsmouth, England
“You must decide whether to launch the D-Day landings on 6 June, despite recent storms making the Channel rough and the skies cloudy. If you delay, the next chance may be in two weeks, but the weather could be even worse and secrecy might be lost. The success of the invasion depends on the right timing.”
Should I give the order to launch the invasion tomorrow, or wait for better weather?
