When the childless king of Spain dies in 1700, he leaves his empire to a grandson of Louis XIV. Much of Europe goes to war to stop France and Spain from joining. Students follow the war from Blenheim to Gibraltar and Barcelona, and see who gained what at Utrecht in 1713.

Un appel de l’histoire · nouveau
The night after the Battle of Blenheim, August 13, 1704
Camp near Blenheim, Bavaria
“You must decide whether to press on into France, risking our tired army and supply lines, or to secure our position and focus on defending Vienna and the Austrian Empire. The French are retreating, but our men are exhausted and far from home.”
Should I advance deeper into enemy territory or hold our position to protect our gains?
