Late summer, 1639
Edo Castle, Edo (now Tokyo)
“You must decide whether to allow the Portuguese traders and priests to remain in Japan, or to expel them completely. Allowing them could bring valuable trade, but also risks more Japanese converting to Christianity, which threatens the power of the shogunate. Expelling them could protect Japan's traditions, but might reduce access to foreign goods and knowledge.”
Should I expel the Portuguese from Japan, or allow them to stay under strict controls?
