a Dutch teenager hangt aan de lijn. De klas beslist.

An evening in autumn, 1943
Utrecht, Netherlands

“You must decide whether to help the resistance by hiding people or passing messages, or refuse and try to stay safe. Helping could save lives but puts your whole family at great risk. If caught, the Germans may arrest or punish you and your loved ones.”

Should my family help the resistance, or is it too dangerous for us?

Live les · nieuw in Classroom

Klassengesprek

15 min

  1. Queen Wilhelmina and the government fled to London in May 1940. Was that the right choice?
  2. Most Dutch people tried to carry on with daily life. What choices did ordinary people face under occupation?
  3. The February Strike of 1941 was a protest against the persecution of Jews. Why was it so rare and so brave?
  4. About three in four Jews living in the Netherlands were murdered in the Holocaust, more than in most of western Europe. Historians give several reasons. Which can you think of?
  5. In the Hunger Winter people ate tulip bulbs to survive. Why did the west of the country starve while the south was already free?

Spelronde

10 min

No ruler in Rule History lived in this period. Play one round as Elizabeth I, who supported the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule. Then compare: who helped the Dutch in 1940-1945, and what could people in an occupied country still decide for themselves?
