In 1966 Mao Zedong called on China's young people to attack "old ideas" and anyone who stood in the way of revolution. Schools closed, Red Guards roamed the cities, and millions of young people were later sent to the countryside. Students explore ten years that China still finds hard to discuss.
Ein Anruf aus der Geschichte · neu
August 1966, days after the first Red Guard rallies
Beijing, China
“You must decide whether to join the Red Guards, as most of your classmates are doing. Joining means showing loyalty to Chairman Mao and taking part in revolutionary activities, but it also means targeting teachers and others accused of being 'counter-revolutionaries.' Not joining could make you stand out and put you at risk.”
Should I join the Red Guards with my classmates, or refuse?
