Sultan Abdülhamid II hangt aan de lijn. De klas beslist.

The summer of 1878, after the Treaty of Berlin
Yıldız Palace, Constantinople

“You must decide whether to keep the new parliament and constitution, sharing power with elected representatives, or to close parliament and rule directly as sultan. Many hope parliament will bring reform and unity, but some fear it will weaken the empire and encourage unrest.”

Should I keep parliament open, or close it and rule alone?

Live les · nieuw in Classroom

Klassengesprek

  1. The Tanzimat promised equality to Muslims, Christians and Jews alike. Why might some subjects welcome that and others resist it?
  2. Why did rival powers call the Ottoman Empire "the sick man of Europe", yet often work to keep it alive?
  3. The first Ottoman parliament met in 1877 and was closed in 1878. Why might a sultan fear a parliament?
  4. In 1894-1896 Armenians were killed in massacres in the empire; historians estimate between about 100,000 and 300,000 deaths. How did such violence change how the world saw the Ottoman state?
  5. Railways, telegraphs and schools were paid for partly with foreign loans. When does borrowing to modernise become dangerous?
