Around 1140 an abbot near Paris rebuilds his church with pointed arches and walls of colored glass. Students explore the new Gothic style, learn how flying buttresses let walls rise higher, and ask why towns spent generations building cathedrals.
Una llamada de la historia · nuevo
Late summer, 1194
Chartres, France
“You must decide whether to begin rebuilding the cathedral of Chartres after it was destroyed by fire. If you rebuild, you must choose whether to follow the new Gothic style, with tall vaults and large stained-glass windows, or to keep to the older, heavier Romanesque style. The new style is expensive and ambitious, but could inspire people for generations.”
Should I rebuild the cathedral in the new Gothic style, and how can I convince the townspeople and tradesmen to support such a great project?
